Games My parrot Plays
« on: May 19, 2007, 10:07:53 AM »
I was wondering what games our parrots play to amuse themselves.  There are a couple of games I play with Chips, including the blinking game and Jacob's Ladder.  However, Chips has a number of other games he plays and like to include me whenever possible.

One game I call "I'll throw it down and You can pick it up".  I don't think I need to describe that one further.  Chips has a variant on that which he plays on his own.  He'll pick up an old wine cork in his beak and then throw it down to see it roll around.  Repeat until well beyond bored.

He also has a number of games of peekaboo.  In one variant he hides behind the door and sends me a signal whistle.  I have to say "Where's Chips?" and he pops his head out.  Again, this can go on forever.  In another variant he hides behind my armchair and sends me a signal click.  I have to lean over the arm of the chair and when he sees me looking he rushes over to the other side of the chair and sends me another signal click so I have to lean over that side.  Repeat until neck becomes stiff.

One game he has stopped playing for the moment is the "Hanging Upside Down Game"  In this he used to cling on to a portion of me and hang upside down, cackling like a maniac.  It was quite cute if we were on our own but if I had company it would look a trifle bizarre to be casually chatting with friends while a mad parrot was hanging from my trousers.

What games do your parrots play?

Paka plays a variant of catch with us. We put him on a table and toss a plastic cap to him. He grabs it and throws it back at us. I always like to try to toss it so it rolls between his legs. One time I tossed it between his legs while he was at the edge of the table. He grabbed down a grasped the edge of the table with his beak. It took him about 15 seconds to figure out why he couldn't move.

Naturally, toss the toys off the cage is a favorite. If I don't tie the toys down on the top of his cage they will all be on the floor in about 30 seconds. He especially likes dropping them on the seed catcher around the edge of his cage since it makes a loud crash.

Thanks,

PakaBird

My friend's mum recently pointed out that I have the same ironing board cover as her. Can anyone think of a more mundane and pointless remark to make than this?

One of Ali's new games is to wait until i have sat down to eat my dinner then say "do you want some?"  So i get up to give her some and she just looks at me and drops it on the floor!!

Other games peekaboo from the bottom of the cage, i have to say wheres Ali and he pops down the other side of the cage.  i say "peekaboo, i can see you".  Ali then says "come on" as a cue to start again!

Haven't tried throw and catch yet but will do next!

Hi,
August Bird loves to play how loud can I bang anything.
He loves to plays birdy kisses with my husband. He walks all over Steven and always winds up at the ears. Loves nibbling on the ears.
I think his favorite game is how many holes can I put in Mommy's fingers today.  :-\   I'm still a little apprehensive about handling him and I think he can tell.
My husband put him on the floor today and he went in the pantry and started straightening the boxes. He would push them until it was straight and go on to the next one. Either he has OCD or is trying to teach me how to keep house.
I think if I can find a game for us to play he may stop biting me so much.

I love the sound of the Paka catch game.  I don't think I will try it with Chips just yet.  That August sounds like a real live wire.  How does the "Chomp the finger" game work then?  As for that Ali, well, throwing toys around eh?  Who does thay remind me of.

lmao  THas too funny.  How long did it take you to train Paka to do that?  I think that GHandi would be a fraid of the rattle.  I've never tried anything that big with him.   My parrot is toy deprived!  How did you train Paka to do his other talking tricks on his back?  We loved that video.  KJ :)

We started that game early with Paka. We started by placing Paka on the table and take a bottle cap or small toy and  throw it toward him. He'd run after it, pick it up and toss it back. Usually in some wild direction so we'd spend a lot of energy fetching the toy. His accuracy has improved lately and he normally send it back in our direction.

One of the funniest things he did was to try to grab the bottle cap when it was right near the edge of the table. Instead of getting the cap, he clamped his beak around the tables edge. He couldn't quite figure out why he couldn't pick up the cap so held onto the edge of the table for about 10 seconds. It was too funny.

Thanks,

PakaBird
