found birdy... but what would he be?

a friend of mine rang this morning to say she had spotted a poster for a missing bird  on a lamppost while out with the dog, and said birdy had been sitting in a tree in her garden all day yesterday.
she admits she did think he was a strange looking bird , about pigeon sized and grey with white wings......
anyway i made her hang up and ring the number straight away, and owner has just rang to thank her and say theyv since found him hes home safe but very very tired.
so..... what do you think he could be?
im wondering if it may have been a timneh as she sais no red tail... can you think of anything else? she is so unbirdy if you know what i mean so didnt ask, and just didnt think to ring me yesterday and say there was a strange looking birdy outside

I know this may sound obvious but could it have been a pigeon?

well timnehs have a red tail,only darker,more a maroon colour. i bet it was more than likely or wood pigeon,i see them all the time

i sent her a photo of poppy and she replied saying yes thats like him but his head was a bit whiter. 
she must av missed the red tail. iv had a damn good giggle at him being  described as a funny looking pigeon, andalso that it sat there all day with her looking at it thinking it was a pigeon
at least hes home and hes safe thats the main thing

  i'd have been out there like a shot,if i saw a parrot
