On a waiting list
« on: January 11, 2012, 06:00:48 AM »
As most of you know I have been waiting to get a grey baby for quite sometiome.  We went to (2) different parrot shops this past weekend. The first one was small but the birds were healthy and well socialized they had 4 congos at around 12 wks all spoken for so I am on a waiting list.  I fell in love with this one who followed me everywhere. I wanted it so bad it even said hi to me.  There are 5 babies coming in 2 weeks but I am #7 on the list I felt like spotting her a 50 to bump me up to like number 4  thats terrible isnt it?  The other one was bigger but the owners never said a word not even a hello there babies were all in one cage 3 different kinds of birds and when u looked through the glass they growled at you. All there other birds bite and none of them talk.  I was very disappointed.  last month I went to another parrot shop and I was also impressed with them so I called them and they will have babies in 3 weeks.  Fingers crossed please I am so ready for a new baby.

I know you are excited to bring your baby home but be patient, your baby will pick you.

Actually Jules both parrot shops breed their babies. Both are clean and hold their babies and they look they are in tip top shape.  One was actually just an aviary until just recently when they also opened a store to sell bird products as well.  They are the ones that I am on a waiting list.  Kgamblin how do I let the baby pick me when they are so young the ones that come to me are already spoken for.  How does a 4 week old grey pick you?  Do they come up to you.  I dont know what do 4 week old babies act like?  How will I know?  Although it is very hard to b patient I know that it is important to wait for the right one.  I am trying so hard.  Thanks to you both for your advice it is much appreciated.

I know it is exciting, but be patient...Kind of like sitting and staring at the boxes in front of the tree.... ;D

Please, Please, please don't get an unweaned baby.  Don't buy into the garbage story that you will bond better.  That is the most vulnerable time in their lives.

If you want your birdy sooner, I would toss the adoption of an older bird from a rescue out there.  Those birds have been evaluated and the rescue staff are going to be able to tell you about their personalities.  Might be a shorter process in the long run and you will give a homeless grey a home!
I have graduated from crazy cat lady to crazy bird lady.  Mommy to Cody (grey)  Sonny (citron) Cher(U2) Chicken (Ducorp) Sunny and Maggie (quakers)  4 kids, and an entire menagerie of other critters.

Michelle,

If you are looking at birds that have been weened and are ready for a new forever home, then you will be interacting with birds that are 3 to 6 months old.  They will pick you.  Ruby picked me. She was 6 months old.  I had quackers and had thought of getting a Grey but thought I couldn't afford the cost.

I was in the pet shop and Ruby kept putting her head down to be scratched when I walked near the cage.  Then she would bob up and down and flirt with me.  The owner got her out for me to "try to hold" because she would not go to anyone else easily.  Ruby jumped from the owner to me and snuggled into my chest rubbed her head on me and I pulled out a credit card like I was a Rockafeller and brought her home with me.  Now I already had an approporate cage and all other stuff to care for her from having quackers.

If you wait for a baby that is weened and a little older that baby will pick you.  Read about how Sophie picked Nancy.  They do have preferences give them a chance and wait until you can check out older chicks.

Or like Lisa said consider a rescue bird.  They can make wonderful additions to your family.  I have one rescue quacker and my mom has a rescue Amazon both are doing fine and now have forever homes.

I didnt mean an unweaned bird I meant that I want to put a deposit down on a 4 week old and visit it a few times a week.  So what I was saying is that say they have 5 babies at 4 weeks 4 people put deposits that means if I want one i would have to put a deposit down.  They get deposits on them so fast that I wont get a chance to pick the one I want   I would never in a million years get an unweaned baby.

I wasn't suggesting that was what you said.  It was more of a warning.  Too many breeders try to convince new owners to take an unweaned baby.

I understand what you mean about getting a 4 week old baby.  I am sure that when you see the baby that is for you, you'll know its the right one.  I didn't mean to rain on your parade.  You have been preparing and looking forward to bringing home your baby for a long time and it is hard not to get in a hurry at this point.
