Nuts and Seeds
« on: October 25, 2011, 02:17:21 AM »
Hi
I was wondering if there's a comprehensive list of nuts and seeds, ones that are OK and ones to avoid, as I would like to make my own recipe and am aware that too many sunflower seeds are harmful.  Peewee just loves the seeds and nuts, but is coming round to the pellets.

i think all of the nuts are ok but all can be fatty as with sunflowers. some fruit seeds are harmful though i'm not sure which. if you look in the list of do's and don'ts,it should say which ones to avoid  :)

just a note: i can't believe this post has had 26 views, and not one single answer  :(

Have you perused the Do and Don't sticky?

Nuts and seeds should be more of the treat catagory rather than staple.
I have graduated from crazy cat lady to crazy bird lady.  Mommy to Cody (grey)  Sonny (citron) Cher(U2) Chicken (Ducorp) Sunny and Maggie (quakers)  4 kids, and an entire menagerie of other critters.

yes, I had a look at the Do's and Dont's, it helped allot, although the reply from Lisarn3 has me confused a little.  When I picked Peewee up at the pet shop, the guy who runs it only stocks seed and nut mixtures and said to feed him one of those.  I guess he said that to increase future sales.  I've read that pellets are good and have purchased some of those too.

Would I be right in thinking that the pellets (Harrisons High Potency Course) are the 'staple' food to feed Peewee, with 'less' sugary Fruit & Veg coming in second and supplemented with treats like the seeds, nuts, grapes etc?

Peewee's coming along great, he readily climbs onto my hand and makes immediately for my shoulder and stays there, although when it's time to go back into his home it's a totally different matter!  (Bribery works well at the moment, but I think she's catching on)

I've taken a couple of photo's and will post them as soon as the son shows me how to.

thanks for the replies:)

Nothing is better for them than fresh veggies and Fruits.  Check the list.  They should be getting some kind of fresh veggies and fruits everyday.  That does not mean processed from the can or jar.  It means fresh cut from the produce market well washed because of pesticides.  Some will tell you here to only feed organic with no pesticides and I know that is the best choice but I cannot always get the organic so just wash extra well before offering to my birds.  As for frozen my birds love the frozen veggies too, just thaw or warm. Not too warm about same temp as for a human baby.  But only buy the veggies that are frozen plain without any sauces or other types of mixes added.  As for fruit again follow the fresh veggie rule.  Just cut it up in chunks after washing really well and give that to them.  Ruby is in love with apples and grapes.  She also likes strawberries and blueberries.  She will occasionally nibble a banana and get this, would rather have the banana with the skin on.  Mostly it is about trying to see what they will take to.  My point being feed more veggies and fruits than seeds and nuts.

Kathy, Ruby, Sweetie and Sammy.

Many commercial food come packed with these but they are high in fat and can lead to health problems.  They do need some, but it should not be that staple source of their diet.
Kathy summed it well.
I feed the Harrisons High Potency and find it to be a quality food that my flock thrives on.
It can be very confusing as you will find much conflicting information out there.  I hope we make this easier and not harder for  you.
