Most of us tend to over feed our birds.  I feed my birds three times a day and they seem to eat about half of what I give them (the other half is thrown on the floor, which I think is hard wired into their pea brains).  I start in the morning giving them fresh vegetables, nuts and fruits, about a quarter cup (4 oz.) each.  In the afternoon, I give them the same amount of dry pellets.  Just prior to lights out we celebrate Nuttime! When they each get three almonds, if they what them (they do).  I have noticed that the quantity they actually eat varies a bit over time.  Keep them weighted to make sure they are not losing weight (or getting too fat, which is almost as bad).

Hi Billcry - that's a pretty good schedule.  Do you have a veggie day, fruit day?  I am not new at the parrot game, but just got a baby grey and it's so frustrating trying to figure out how much she eats/doesn't eat.  I use a skewer as well and load it up with about 6-7 items - they pretty much get flung all over the place, but at least 'I think' it's in her mouth for a split second - maybe.  How long do you leave the morning bowl in the cage?  Do you leave pellets in at all times or just the afternoon?  Do you leave pellets overnight?

My Gawd so many questions - sorry, but I'm starting all over again and I am a tad paranoid about everything as I lost my grey in July, quite unexpectedly - so I'm really watching/worrying about this little gal.

Thanks,

Billcry

Veggies in the morning with added egg (once a week) occasional leftovers like rice, sometimes mixed with oatmeal, cornmeal.  I microwave the vegs for about three minutes and let cool.  I only use fresh or frozen vegetables.  Fruit is a treat only a couple times a week. The vegs are left out until the afternoon and are discarded.  I feed seven parrots. They each get about two tablespoons of food on average.  Sometimes they eat everything and lick the bowls and seem starved for more.  Just as often, they leave most of it alone, just nibbling throughout the day.  About 4 pm I give them their pellets, and a mix of dried fruit, nuts (no peanuts, only pistachios, almonds and walnuts).  I check their water bowls for debris and change if necessary. The pellets are left overnight.   Every week, I fortify their vegs with a tablespoon of red palm nut oil.  For treats, the almonds at night and rarely peanuts, which they love to their detriment.  Occasionally I give them a few sunflower seeds.  They love peanut butter and plain corn flake ice cream cones, sometimes with a treat stuck in the bottom.  One of my secrets to get them to eat pellets is to take the leftover pellets each day and put them in a blender, turning them into a cornmeal like powder, which is then mixed with their veggies.  They seem to love it.
