My baby grey "Lainey" is throwing up half of what she eats
« on: September 15, 2011, 10:30:32 PM »
I will feed her the KAYTEE BABY GREENS in with her formula once a day and then her formula twice more by itself. (Her pellets are on the way). I ordered her organic pellets and should arrive tomorrow. But, here is the issue: She will "heave" bringing her neck forward greatly and dropping her head and throw up her meals. I check her crop and try to keep her satisfied. But, I don't get why she throwing up daily. HELP HELP

You need to get her to a vet ASAP.
I have graduated from crazy cat lady to crazy bird lady.  Mommy to Cody (grey)  Sonny (citron) Cher(U2) Chicken (Ducorp) Sunny and Maggie (quakers)  4 kids, and an entire menagerie of other critters.

if it's duruing or right after you feed her/him, this is a case of over feeding to me. But a vet visit won't harm you or Lainey. Do you syringe feed him or spoon, I assume syringe feeding here, coz the baby is in control with the spoon feeding to a large extent.

She started again last night around 10:00 o'clock with the vomiting. I found a bird vet and I called his office at 10:30 and he does his own calls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HEE_HAW. He said to give her gatorade and bring her in first thing this morning. I did. Oh! GOSH!!!!! People listen to me........ I never saw the vet, the assisitance wash their hands. NOT one time. Thank God she was first to be seen. I took a clean towel from home and hand cleaner and asked him to use it before he touched her!!!!!! Yes, I did. He said I see you brought your towel. WELL, yeah. The spray you guys use takes around 20 minutes to do it's job that is only if it is mixed half right. The HELPER came in and was going to take her to xray and right back. She did her hands too with the cleaner she had just come out of the bowels of hell in a dog kennel probably wiping a dog's ass and DID NOT WASH UP. I happened to be in a room STRAIGHT across from the sink with a soap dispenser that came off of Noah's Ark. She asked if she could weigh her and yes was my answer. Low and do behold the weighing bowl had WHITE BIRD CRAP ON THE SIDE about a two inch streak.
I said wait up.................. I need paper towels to clean that bowl to weigh her in or you will have to pull a number out of the great beyond and write it down. I took some Lysol spray and sprayed the bowl and then helped myself to their sink and rinsed it in scalding water for about a minute. Grab some more of their paper towels and dried the weighing bowl and handed it back to the "little helper". She then was weighed and come in at a whopping 13.9 ounce.
WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO what a trip. She is fine after being given 2 shots and antibiotics to be given to her at home. They will be handing out fans and ice water before I go back to him ever again. He was super nice and SEEMED to be up on what was going on. But, I WILL NOT put her in that enviroment ever again. IF I have to drive to Halifax France. Bridget. Maybe I ain't so green afterall.........LOl LOL

thats 395grammes in metric.
i gotta be honest i dont see my vet wash his hands either, but only because their routine between patients is wash the examination table then wash their hands in the sink in the exam room before the next person is allowed in.
the main thing now is hes been seen and has recieved treatment , so hopefully hes on the mend.

ps i always take a towel on vets visits, but its to wrap my bird in during his exam rather than for anyone to wash their hands with.

I don't feel I went overboard. Their immune system (I feel) may not be too strong. I can't take any chances with Lainey. She feels so much better this morning. Thank you for your reply and time. Bridget

bridget i wasnt implying you went overboard, sorry if you read it that way. he is your bird and any vet should be happy to use a hand cleanser at the request of an owner.
i would have asked the bowl was cleaned too when i saw it had birdy poop on it.
my comment about the towel isnt referring to cleanliness either btw, its because if lainey has his own snuggly towel like my lot have its comforting during a vets vist where theyr in a strange environment. i always tumble dry the birdy towels so they are baby soft for them, and ensire everyone is used to being put into a towel to cut on stress.
i hope lainey is feeling better today

poor lainey, did she have an infection then?

you were right though to ask them to wash their hands, because if you couldnt see them do it how would you know whether they had or not?  :o

that is quite a good weight for her, hope she continues to grow into a beautiful little bird  :-*

Ali... I'm sure Bridget didn't interpret your comment as " going overboard!" the difference is, you trust your vet, which is how it should be!!! I trust mine as well.
I tend to go " overboard", and admit it! While being a single parent and dealing with two asthmatic kids, a cold for them while little, could be a death sentence. I would literally hand my pediatrician purell if I didn't see him wash his hands. He never got insulted.
I'm sure thats why my job gave me a position on the " safety patrol". Write doctors up, if they didn't wash their hands before seeing a patient. I never did of course... just grabbed them, told them to wash!
Remember all... soap and water is the best! Purell in my mind is for emergency use only. We all can use a simple reminder, everytime we handle our birds, our children... wash our hands!  Nancy

I absolutely did not take you wrong in any way. I am sorry if I came off that way. All of you guys have been such a help to me and I can't thank you enough. She is doing great now and is still on an antibotic daily until Sunday, I believe. I thought she was going to bird Heaven friday night. I had never seeked out an avian vet. Never needed on until now. He helped her to get well but "by Jigs" NOBODY had any intention of washing up before handling her. That made me crave peanut butter all over.
Are all avian vets so expensive or is it just mine? An xray and two shots and 1/2 ounce of antibotic was $180.00. I did not mind paying it. But, my Lord could they not have been much cleaner? That just made the word "professional" vanish in my eyes.
Grey's immune system isn't that great and I never in a million years would have dreamed how unclean they were. I will find another vet if I have to go to Halifax France (if there is such a place). LOL. Thank you all.

i havnt had the pleasure of an avian vet yet. my vet is from south africa, and is familiar with dealing with parrots for basic veterinary needs which is all iv needed so far .
however i have recently insured my birds, as if one was sick im aware they are very expensive, i insured 3 birds on 1 parrot keepers policy for 20 pounds a month which is excellant. this covers any vets costs for anything over the first 35 pounds per incident . now i have the insurance i need to enrol them with the nearest avian vetyouv just reminded me thanks.
i havnt yet insured sinbad as with him being in such a poor state on arrival i didnt think i could honestly say he was well on the day i took out a policy and not feel a fraud. now he has picked up weight and coming on i must get him insured too.
theres a halifax in england, is that any help?  ;D

Whoah! I would have a hard time dealing with any vet cost. My vet cost, is rabies, kennel cough. My birds get a well check visit once a year.   Nancy
