i have 'the african grey parrot' paper back and 'a pet owners guide to the african grey' in hard back also i'm sure i had one with a red & white cover (hard back) but i cant find it  :D

bear in mind they are a bit dated and i find alot of the info' contradictory  :)

While not belittling any writer, most books (not all) on pets are written with the knowledge pertaining to the specific bird that the writer him or herself has, so most of the times it doesn't cover all sides or aspects of a behavior or issue.

I consider the forum a much much better place to learn new and practical things to rectify any issues with one's bird and/or getting the reassurance that you are on the right path.

I think it is GREAT... to read books on our birds. I don't think alot has changed! Of course, whenever I wasn't sure what to do, I relied on my parental skills. Luckily, they are now 17 and 20 and doing " just fine!"
Of course, I heard Ryan and Sean, talking to Sophie, telling her " how sorry they were"... but these are mom's rules. of course my number one rule, was " to pluck, and defeather!"
All of my rules, have always been fair. What I expect of one, I expect of the other. I expect the entire family, to help with birds and dogs. There is no picking and choosing, who you like best. All help with feeding and cleaning cages. Sophie, Kiki and Sunny, are exposed to the entire family. I expect them to step up to all of us! They don't have a choice. Of course, I am Rom.( mom). If their is behavior problems, I am the one to intervene, and get the family back on track. This may sound mean, but this is what works for us! Our birds are sooo spoiled, but not brats!
I am worried for their future. Ryan is leaving, to go to college in North Carolina. Sophie is going to freak! Sean will be leaving for college at the end of the year, to go to Florida. Kiki is going to freak out as well! Sunny is going to be fine. Just having me, is enough for him.  Nancy

It actually will go well, or not so well! With Ryan leaving, may be a problem. He is the child that is able to communicate best, to all.( bird whisperer!). Sophie, LOVES him to death. She also considers me to be her mom. I am concerned with her. Ryan spends alot of time with her, with him being gone during the day, me working, I'm worried. This will be something new for her.
Kiki and Sunny will be fine. They are in love, and have each other. Sunny is actually Ryans bird, but as he and Kiki have fallen in love, they have each other. Serious changes, for Sophie. I'm really worried for her.  Nancy

i'm sure they'll be ok nancy.  :)

going slightly off topic, but what if ryan was to make a few voice recordings of himself, you know saying his usual things he would say at while at home? or make a story up for the birds or read and record a book?  :)

Thanks Jules... great idea. Sophie has always had attention, 24/7., forever! I am headed for " serious changes!" Not sure, how Sophie will adapt. I know, we are " bonded". Push come to shove.... Sophie always looks for me. I just worry, I will be working, and not there for her. In the past, when she has a " worry", Ryan has always helped her. Now I'll be gone, and Ryan won't be there to help her.
Sophie is fantastic! I want her to remain so. Since our family dynamics are changing, I worry it will affect her negatively.   Nancy
