What can I use to make perches from?

natural, untreated, bird safe wood is recommended. Go to the safe plants thread and you will find a lot of bird safe trees to make a perch from.

Offer a variety of perches of different textures and diameters also.  This is healthy for their little feet.

Also add a concrete perch for him to maintain his beak and claws, you can also buy natural tree perches that have been stripped of their bark, and heat treated for bugs, mold and bacteria, thereby eliminating some potential hazards even if they are a bit on the expensive side.
