Desperately needing help
« on: May 09, 2011, 02:57:01 PM »
Hey everyone! It is with a very heavy heart that I write this; as I am in desperate need to re-home my Father's 2 birds that lives in Hobe Sound,Florida. My father is 80 years old and his health is failing. I live in South Carolina and my Husband is down there at my father's as I write this to bring the 2 birds home to me on Saturday or Sunday until I can re-home them. The birds are SKIPPER a 40yr old Orange winged Amazon and RASCAL is a 25 year old Moustache Parakeet -- They MUST REMAIN TOGETHER.. Skipper is very protective of Rascal and they are BEST BUDDIES.. This is going to be a really tough situation because neither bird is "handable" you must use a stick to handle Skipper - My mother acquired Skipper when he was 17 years old and he was not hand tamed then and Mother was never comfortable with handling him. He is also not accustomed to being in a cage, He HAS a cage but only goes in it to eat..Rascal is somewhat "handable" but still not well hand tamed. Both birds do "talk" but mostly laugh... Rascal talks but it is not understandable. I will try to post a picture of them My mother passed away 2 years ago and My father lives alone,it has become too much of a responsibility and a burden for him to handle. I am not of good health myself and am not able to keep up with nor do I have the room for 2 extra birds in the house. I really don't want to re-home these birds as They are all that is left of My mother (Skipper has my mother's laugh!) but It is just not best for me to keep them, I would not be able to properly care for them and feel they would suffer. Please let me know if there is anyone out there interested in these two birds and we could work out a very resonable solution.
Thanks so much everyone, you can reach me on these boards,Facebook or Email @ sandbard@hughes.net
Sincerely, Sherrie

I'm so sorry to hear of this news, Sherrie Best of luck to you in finding a home. With all you have been going through, I know Greyson, Cheyann, and the crew are all you can handle. I don't know how you do it!

So sorry to hear this Sherrie, I wish I could help, but I have my hands full with the aquariums and Koosie, and I just wouldn't have the time to take proper care of all of them. If you cant come up with a home talk to these two places, they take animals in these situations and they will be properly cared for and kept together. As of now I have no friends or family that want to take on Koosie when I go(she's bitten them all ;D ;D ) and unless something changes in the future one of these is where she'll go. Call them and talk to them, explain things and see what they say,   http://jungleisland.com/    formerly known as parrot jungle    or  http://www.flamingogardens.org/      I have personally spoken to one of the volunteers at Flamingo Gardens and she told me a lot about "behind the scenes" and I would feel very comfortable with Koosie there, Both places have top avian vets on staff.

Both places are an hour  to hour and a half south of Hobe Sound, Flamingo Gardens is about 20 minutes from me by surface streets, has been there as far back as I can remember and I have never heard one negative word spoken about them.

Sherrie,I am so sorry to hear of your situation,I know this must be heartbreaking. I am in Sebring Fl. I don't know where Hobe Sound is and I don't think I could take both birds on maybe one of them,as I already have a grey and a Quaker and I know you don't want to separate so sorry I can't help. My heart breaks for you and your dad.

YES Sean,, They lived in Jupiter for about 15 years then moved to Hobe Sound (30 minute drive) and have been there for about 10 years now. I am surprised to know ANYONE who has even heard of Jupiter!! I always get some kind of crack about it being close to Mars or neptune!!!! ::) ::) ::) ::).... But both are great little cities to visit and vacate but I DONT want to live there!!!  Thank you all so much for your help and thoughts, Just keep an eye or ear out for anyone that you think may be able to take both of them they have been together for 20 years and I just wouldn't have the heart to split them up they are each other's life and they went thru so much trauma after Mom passed away cause she was their only caregiver,, Dad has done a good job with them since Mom's passing but now it's become way too much for him and there is no one else down there with him that could help take care of them .. But please continue to keep an ear out if you hear of anyone that might be interested, I am not going to charge any money for them (birds, cages, toys and dishes) If  I can find them a good home that may want them I would not want any money for them..

Jupiter is near Stuart and Melbourne(Australia ?? ??)    Lisa however long it would take you to drive to Miami, take off about 1.5 hours each way.
