How long does a molt last?
« on: October 09, 2010, 07:12:58 AM »
Hi all,
My 16month old CAG Sapphire i assume is molting, she has been for months, she has no bald patches either, but how do i know if its a molt feather or one thats been plucked in boredom?  I came home form work yesterday and there were about 20 of those small grey feathers in the bottom of her cage, no bald patches though.  She has plenty of toys too, she is always happy, her diet i know could be better but she wont eat certain things, she hates sunflowers, she has a bowl of seed in her cage everyday all day, she has carrots as thats all she will eat, ive tried her on all veg cooked in different ways, ive tried her on organic pellets and its a big fat no to everything, after many attempts.  She hates being sprayed or bathed and gets in her water bowl when she wants to be wet.  Any idea anyone? Thank you
Mel & Sapphire

It usually take about 2 months or so, but they tend to shed their feathers all year round. If it's a pluck, God forbid, you will soon see chewed feathers and tail feathers and they usually start chewing with their chest and tail.

But I think it's a moult.

I just know you're right but i like reassurance.  The feathers are not chewed and she has no bald patches, she does not have as many red tail feathers as normal greys now but the new ones that are coming through are a very vibrant red. Thank you xxxx

mel is this sapphires frist molt? i remember when jasper had his it went on for four months or more. now he seems to be molting all the time, maybe with a week or so break inbetween  :)

i have heared also that our heating systems can cause more molting because birds are not in a natural environment  :)
