Kathy, to redo your floors, YOU MUST REMOVE YOUR FIDS 1st sand them, use a square sander as they are far more forgiving than a drum sander, this will give you a clean fresh wood to start with, you will need an edger to go around the edge of the room, empty the dust bags often as there have been very very rare cases of the dust self combusting due to static electricity, only in dry climates I believe. Then you can stain the floor if you choose, this will change the color to what you want. Then apply your polyurethane with a sponge applicator (they are made specifically for this), allow to dry between coats, some light sanding with a 150-180 grit sanding screen may be needed to smooth out any rough spots, and just keep applying layers until you have as many as you want. The equipment can be rented, start with the lower number sandpaper first and work your way to the higher number.(the lower the number the coarser the paper). Always wear a dust mask while sanding, and an aspirator while staining and sealing, some of the urethane's have very strong fumes. Minwax spar urethane is outdoor stuff, I used it on my aquarium stand and canopy, and it is really tough stuff, so are the fumes. You must let the house air out adequately before returning your fids. I know it sounds like a lot, but a 2-3 days hard work and you can have "new" durable floors that will make the super glue factor far less damaging.
