Bump by nostril
« on: February 24, 2007, 04:00:58 PM »
I have put a picture in the gallery. My AG has a bump by her nostril. I have had her about a week. She doesn't trust me to touch her, or move her, so I didn't want to traumatize her by taking her to the vet.
I started her on Ornacyn Plus last night to see if that gets results.
The feathers are still on it. Have you seen something like this before. I'm not sure if photo is posted right, and it wouldn't let me attach into posted message.

it's in the gallery. Her bump is right below her eye, I hope you can see it. You might have to zoom out, the picture took really big

Saw the picture in the gallery! Its called "Rhinolith" .  More common in Timneh greys but also happens in congo. It is because of Vitamin A deficiency. You will need to give vit A supplement and if needed will have to get the lump surgically removed.
Also is there Nasal Discharge?

no, there is no nasal discharge. I started the ornacyn plus, because she was making a clicking sound also, and sounded a little raspy. I also put up a heat bulb on one corner and and a sunbulb. along with a humidifier. We have gas heat and it is very dry. I did the heat, sun, and humidifer yesterday so I hope it will make a difference. What foods do they like that has Vitamin A?

Her whole life she has only had seeds ands peanuts.
I am trying to introduce stuf to her, but she just throws it down.

Also I have noticed something else. If you are looking at her, the bump is on the right side, but she has been closing her left eye alot? The eye on the opposite side of the bump.

If she does indeed have this Rhinolith, I read that she will probably have to have it surically removed.
This bird was a rescue adoption, and I was told that she was given antibiotics and finished the dosage.
I knew I would have expenses, but I wasn't prepared to pay for surgery on a rescued bird.

Does anyone know if Ohio has any clinics or donated funds available if she needs surgery?

Before I would start jumping to conclusion as to what it is and if surgery is needed I would take her to an qualified avian vet and go from there. Onacyn plus is a good antibiotic for respiratory and intestinal problems which may not treat her problem. :)

Carrots have vit A, but i would give a supplement in this situation. However i strongly recommend making a vet visit to get a better prespective of things
