wondering about the water
« on: February 21, 2007, 09:54:25 PM »
I know several of you have your AG used to water and showers.
I have had my AG only 4 days. I have no idea if anyone has ever introduced her to water. I don't think she has ever been misted, or bathed. I put a shallow pan of water in the cage, and she's done nothing with it. I didn't know if I should wheel her cage into the bathroom and shut the door. Then I can open her cage and I can take a bath to see how she responds.

I have not touched her yet. She will come to me when I go to the cage. but thats it

What do you guys think?

How old is your bird?  When I got my first baby I just let her follow me around at first.  Four days is kind of soon to start anything too traumatic.  I think the water being available is good to start.  My bird started following me around and sort of followed me into the shower is how I started it. I would let the bird get comfortable with you first.

She is 12 years old. With elderly woman for 11, and with rescue for 1, because the woman passed away

If it were me I would let her get use to me and her new house before I would start trying to bathe her or move her into other rooms. Give her awhile to adjust first. You never now she may bathe on her own once she fills a bit more comfortable.

Boy I feel brutal after reading the reply's.
I board birds and they get a bath the first A.M they are here and every A.M they are staying with us, I consider myself gentle and spray upwards to let the mist fall gently on them usually by the third day they know I am coming and are ready to bath I have had a few exceptions that are not used to this but I do a pleasent spray and I begin with the birds that are familiar with my routine and mist a little in the direction of the new bird and back to one of the others (this is a happy time at my place).
When I first adopted Gizmo (male) he did not like bath time, he now baths twice daily on his own (for my guys they think vacuum time is bath time??)

When i first got Solo i got the same feeling that he was unfamiliar with water and shower/bathing. I misted him the first morning and he seemed to hate it back then. Now every morning he howls and calls until he gets his misting done. I'm not sure if he enjoys it but he is surely aware of the fact that it is an essential part of his routine.
