Where to put my cage
« on: February 19, 2007, 10:53:18 PM »
HI all,
I just joined. I got my African Grey yesterday. She is 12 yrs old, previous owner passed away.

Just a couple of questions

The bottom of her cage is the solid pull out tray, and it has about 8 inch legs below it.
Since the cage is not directly on the floor, I was wondering if I can put it overtop of where a heat register is. Because i want her by the window, but every window has a register in front of it.
The cage bottom would stop it from blowing directly on her, but my husband was worried about a draft when the furnance kicks on?

Is this OK?

I don't think she is getting enough light. Right now she is about 4 feet from the window on a perpendicular wall, so she can see the window, but maybe not see things outside. We are both gone during the day, and I read that they should be able to see cars and birds, etc.

Thanks for helping

The thing with heat registars is the dry air
can cause irregular molting, as well as dry skin
But we all have them, which is why I mist my birds daily, Have a humidifier and a water turtle tank.

Place the cage where it has maximum no. of walls around it. i.e. in a corner preferably. This way the grey has solid walls around it and does not have to worry about things approaching from those sides. Placing the cage infront of a window is also not recommended since a grey should have some way of getting out of a sunlight if it feels like it. And no you cannot place over a heat registar for the reasons Sandi pointed out.

Use a UV lamp if you are out during sunlight hours and if u are home then take your grey into the sun for an hour daily.
