Hello everyone, what a wonderful community of helpful people!!!  I have made this site one of my favorites and will visit it often.  I own an 18month old African Grey named Coocoo  He is amazing & we are both learning what he likes (I've had him for 3 weeks)  My question is....  are pistachios fine in the shell (he LOVES them , the salt I think is what attracts him)   Also, how much apple is too much apple?   He has this on his 'kebob' when he is on his perch and seems to take a bite, suck the juice out and then drop the pulp.
Thank you all in advance and I look forward to reading through the rest of this site.
Kristen

Hello and welcome to the forum Kristen/Coocoo from Ali/Captain.

Salted pistachios are a strict No-No, but you can give unsalted ones to him in moderation. If he can't work to open it, crack the shell a bit and then serve him. Did you say that you own coocoo, that's what we all thought when we first got our greys, now they own us.

Apple is fine he can have whatever he wants just be sure to remove the seeds and wash them first.  They do tend to eat the bits they want and spit out whatever they don't want.  You're lucky he didn't fling it across the room at you! ;D

I saw that strawberries were on the list but to be cautious because of possible pesticide content. My question is do they not get the little seeds things on the outside stuck in their beaks, I know i sometimes do when I eat strawberries.

Sorry may be a silly question but I am still new to all this.

Thanks,
Melissa and Timmy

I don't think that would be a problem for them.  They probably just eat the seeds.

The danger of pesticide is there in fruits and vegs, but thoroughly wash them with water before serving might take care of it to a large extent.

Welcome Kristen and coocoo. I give them half an apple every few days. I cut it up, no seeds included.( never really thought about it!) I just do what I do, falling back on the toddler days for kids. Sophie likes an apple more, when I'm eating it. I get a bite, she gets a bite. Then she gets lazy.... wants to steal from my mouth. ( not a good habit to get into!) She wants the juice, wants me to do the work!  Nancy

Thank you so much for the kind welcomes.  I am so thankful I asked about the pistachios because I've been giving him 2-3 a day.  No more unless they are unsalted.   I am still reading through all of the wonderful posts.   Thank you again !

Everyday, I provide my birds with birdfood from a birdstore. I top it with three peanuts each, as well as buttered toast. For the fruit and veggie tray, they all share. Blackberries, Strawberries, bananas, raspberries, carrots, green beans, asparagus...were thinking green peppers next! I'm anti peppers.... kids say, let them deside! I'm concerned they will be very unhappy!  Nancy

Nancy,

My fids love the peppers and get excited when they realize what they are getting.  Let them try the peppers and see how they react.

Kathy.... you are soooo right! I'm focusing on my likes and dislikes! I've got the peppers.... told kids to give them as treats, as I hate them so much! I feel like I am poisoning my birds! LOL! ( just a true hate!) I actually am worried there may be a health issue, as I think peppers, are " SO GROSS!" I will  be waiting in the " background", for their decision. ( CPR for them, or me?")
I can deal with sooo many issues, but peppers, is a true challenge for me! How strange is that?   Nancy

Hello everyone, would it be OK to give fresh, parsley, thyme, rosemary or sage to my 15week old Peewee?  I guess not all at the same time?

What are you cooking? LOL I have no idea, as I am not the greatest cook. I would be hesitant, as these are ingrediants that I would put in, if I was cooking.
What I cook for my family, I feel confident to give my birds. Of course I don't give my birds a spaghetti dinner, but fruits and veggies... I treat them  as I have always treated my children. One is a body builder, the other, a wrestler. I have always followed their diet, outside of peppers. I HATE them, kids LOVE them! Kids refuse to offer them in their diet. I have to do it. They have lots of choices and at this point in their life, eat all fruits and veggies we put in front of them. I can't think of any fruit and veggie, they dislike. They use to throw their food at the walls. Repitition!  Nancy

It's great to have this list! Thanks. I don't go crazy about their diet, except for foods that are a serious NO!
I don't worry about organic veggies or fruits. I shop at local farm market. If it is organic... YAY!They are all seriously addicted to fruits and veggie. It can be expensive. They desire as a group, to have fruits and veggies. I taught them to love them. now I have to deliver. I do... just have to make a plan.   Nancy
