Disobedience
« on: December 24, 2009, 04:13:08 AM »
I am having issues lately with "Punky" disobeying when I ask her to step up or down, and I just don't know how to teach her not to do things that I don't want her to do.  Like every time I go to walk down the stairs and she sees me, she flies over to the stairs.  I don't want her on my stairs because its an unsafe place for her to be, but if I tell her to step up so I can take her to her cage, she either bites me or puts her head down so that I can't get my hand to her feet.  She would wait for me for hours on the stairs if I let her, and sometimes I have because I don't have the time to deal with her disobedience.   :(  But I would love some advice on how to deal with this issue because I want her to be safe always and also to not start any bad habits of not listening to me.

How old is Punky? It is may be because she is in the adolescent stage of her life say around 2-3 years of age so the hormonal changes may be the culprit. Or may be because she doesn't want to go back to her cage and resist you.
I would suggest giving her treats in or on the cage only so that she would look forward to having something special everytime you pick her up from the stairs to her cage.
You have to be very vigiliant in trying to find out the reason as well as devise a plan to teach her to stay where she is when you go downstairs.
Let the seniors log in to advice you properly in this regard.

I have the same problem with Bellino when hes on top of his cage, nowhere else, you have to be firm with her, curl your fist up and go underneath the beak with your other hand behind her so she cant back away. Dont let her win the argument or you will end up with a parrot living on the stairs! Bellino does it every night and screams the place down until he gives in and steps up then he becomes his sweet little self again!

nancy clipping is not the answer to everything  :(

it can seriously knock a birds confidence, especially if they've been flying for a number of years.  :(

I am recognizing, that many people, feel in favor, of leaving their birds, "full flighted!" I choose not to do so, for Sophie. It is a matter of "what she enjoys to do!" She prefers gardening, walking with me. Kiki on the other hand, Loves to fly, so she tends to be full flighted, but gets "mad", that she can't go out and garden, etc. Any bird with "behavior issues", will tend to do better trimmed, from the start. Eventually, you must choose what works for them!   Nancy M

I have to side with Nancy M. Your CAG can fly and wants to be with you...... She doesn't care if you are on the stairs or somewhere else, doesn't make any difference to her. If she is flighted you have to accept the fact that she can go wherever she pleases. If you want to keep her flighted then you might want to teach her stick training so you can have her step onto the stick and put her on her cage......My birds will always step onto the stick and it is very helpful when we have a disagreement on where they should be.

kins23- Why can't kiki being full flighted be in the garden? You should get him used to a flightsuit!

both Peggy and Georgie are fully flighted Peggy doesn't fly much she lazy were Georgie fly every were and anywhere she ,we just have to keep doors closed both Peggy and Georgie step up no problems for me, they also go back in there cages without Eny problems, they now if I'm in and they are in the cages when the weather is nice i have the patio doors open for them as they love the breeze, and some times they go  out in their travel cadges in the garden   ;D if i can get a Porto of Georgie doing her slide down the banister i will put it on facebook

Karine,   I would LOVE to have Kiki be in the garden with us! I never even heard of this flight suit until last week!I made the mistake at asking at our local birdstore, that trims them. The owner, was NOT happy! He has trimmed Kiki since she was a baby! (I actually bought her from this store.) He trims her extra short, but she can fly, perfect, even after her trim.I just never thought "so high!" While sitting on her favorite baby apple tree, she flew to the top of our neighbors willow tree. We got out a very big ladder, and were able to get her down! (she was quite amused!) I was NOT!I will obviously have to get this suit online.  Nancy M

lol, i second that!
you don't have to bring back a 6 month old thread to spout wing-trimming nonsense.
