Table-top gyms
« on: December 08, 2009, 09:29:08 AM »
:-\ I'm at a bit of a loss as to to which to buy. My baby JM loved the gym on top of her old owner's cage, and seems a bit lost with just a single bar atop her new one. She's a smallish CAG. I hope it's OK to post these links here... do you guys suppose either of these is appropriate, and if not could you point me towards some that are?

I was also thinking of reclaiming the giant net-like toy my now-passed Caique ignored; thoughts?

Oh, and PS~ I definitely won't be making one myself. I can injure myself on a spoonful of porridge repeatedly and am currently nursing three, possibly more, spinal spinal fractures from rock-climbing. My body and I don't get along :P and sharps things generally hate me.

i know youv just said youd not be making one yourself, but havnt u a brother/ dad/ boyfriend or hubby who could make you one?
they realy can be so much more fun than bought ones . xmas pressie to you perhaps?

that was poppys, made using an old wheeled tv stand , a piece of ply and pieces of untreated edging wood from a diy store, bead pack from a craft superstore.
my staffy has since killed this table by using it the bars to stand on to look out the window. it wasnt built to have a 24kg dog on lol.

the ones you listed from ebay are fine, but very very costly and youd still need to put toys on for him to do. mine cost 20 pounds in bits for it for comparison.

lol My father AND my boyfriend are chemists. I wouldn't trust my father with a hammer unless my life depended on it  :D My boyfriend is much handier, yes, but he tends to think of things that bond to each other on the atomic level, rather that macro... so he'd probably hold the woodi n his hand contemplating it's chemical properties, and never get around to attaching it to anything  ::)

i used my driver!  ;D

seriously tho, i drew out what i wanted, i used a junior hacksaw to cut all the bits of wood to size, assembled the abacus rows, cut out all the struts for the stairs etc , sorted out some buttons for a button board, got the base , the stand, the pvc stick on planks for the tabletop . you dont need to be a genius to do any of that.

then i passed it to ady (who worked for me at the time).  he laughed at me cos id already refused help with it, but screwed the very first screw into my finger and made it bleed so the job went to him lol.
he used a combination of screws, nails and a hot glue gun (for the stair treads to secure in drilled holes). remember they need to be zinc free. you can get stainless screws/ nails from screwfix.

theres some bits you cant see clearly, but they include a spinning button board , a little plastic cup that needs to be lifted via a peg to get a treat from underneath. just use your imagination. and NEVER leave it under the sitting room window if you have a dog !

if you think thats awesome you should see what else he built him. il put a couple of pics in the gallery now of poppy in his aviary. theres more toys etc up in there now, and a plaque in memory of my dad whos passing made it all possible but the pics were taken befor that.

Sheesh, what was I thinking dating a chemist when there are obviously much handier specimens out there Hee. ;) On the upside, he has tidying OCD, so the cage gets cleaned out AND scrubbed 2-3 times a week :D

Shhhh he'll hear you! It's pretty funny sometimes. When he's had a frustrating day at the lab, he'll walk in, put his things down, and just start SCRUBBING. My kitchen and bathroom never sparkled like they have since I started seeing him  ;D I didn't even know my bigger cage was actually silver under all that grime  :o

The other advantage is, it forces ME to keep things tidy, so he doesn't feel like he has to go into cleaning-tornado mode every time he enters my apartment.

PLUS, he has no problems with cleaning up bird poop, because he grew up with a macaw  8)

I made a jungle gym above my bed with a metal shelf from wal-mart and put a gigantic wood and rope toy for a macaw on it, its just kind of laying on top of it. Then I have some hanging wooden toys hanging from under it, and also on top is a cardboard insert from a bolt of fabric. all of this entertainment and Charlie's favorite toy is the small hole in my wall that is now roughly the size of a silver dollar.

Yeah blue seems to like altering the decor to suit his needs. He currently has three gaping holes in one of my walls, they started the same way so beware!

Its almost like being a designer for the bird, and nothing is ever the way they want it... picky clients!
