Hi! Looking to buy a baby African Grey
« on: September 04, 2009, 10:57:56 PM »
I have been doing some research on buying a baby.  I know that it will be allot of work and needed to know if an 8-5 job would jeopardize it's well being.  Please give me your thoughts.  I appreciate all your help!

In my opinion it will be ok as long as your bird would have the opportunity to come out for most of the evening when you are home and for long spells at the weekend.

i agree, the more time available to them, the better they behave (um. yeah) ...lol, they will survive just fine, but you have to make it up to them when you get home  ;D
when life hands you lemons, break out the tequila and salt.

i go out to work at 6 30 every morning and don't get home till 4- 430, i leave the radio on for Peggy every day, and as soon as i get home i let her out of the cage straight away play with her for about half hour, then put her on her play stand while i clean her cage out she then sits with me while i cook tea, then i have another play with her, Peggy is a happy birdy always singing dancing, and generally a blinking nuisance,
Peggy goes to bed 7   730 every night with a dark cover on her cage then, i have my time with the family, what I'm am saying is if you do it right you can have a full time job and still give them plenty of quality time, family time and a social life, its a matter of routine and patience, they need routine

Hi and welcome Cathleen, it's good that you are searching for answers before actually getting a parrot. I advise you to stick around this forum or any other forum that you may like for about a month or so before getting hands on your parrot. Read the past threads as well as the fresh ones so that you may get a feel of how it is to own a grey. Actually, you'll learn that you don't own them, THEY own you.
For a full time job like yours, it is recommended to have a baby grey as s/he will adopt to the routine that you may follow with it rather than an older bird which already has a lifestyle of his/her own and may find it clashing with yours which may lead to serious problems.
Good Luck
