New Grey
« on: August 22, 2009, 06:29:15 PM »
Hi I am new to this board as I just bought my first grey- I am not new to birds though. I have a beautiful Goffin named Ozzy!!! I have had him for 2 yrs and he was only 6 mo when I got him. He is a wonderful bird!!!  I have always wanted a Grey and when I went looking husband fell in love with the Goffin and so he was our first!!  :) We are so very happy with him- even though the screaming can be a bit much at times- he rarely does this- and I think it is just a  big hello actually :D Anyway I do have a question about my Grey- Her name is Gracie- I named her this because she was only 4 mo old when I got her and so ungraceful-( I just thought it was a cute play on words!!) Well she is now 5 1/2 mo old- she is so adorable-well adjusted- she is not timid or loud- at this point!!! ;) My Q's is: Now Gracie is a good eater there is a prob though-if it is not pellets- she wants to be hand feed- for example- both of my birds LOVE scrambled eggs- but Gracie wants me to stand there and hand feed her or she stops eating- now for pellets or bird treats she will eat- I make them edamame
pods and she will hold these and eat them also her hot peppers- bread- I am wondering if it is because she is a baby yet and the soft food reminds her of handfeeding? and if so should I continue to hand feed her the soft stuff or put it in her dish and let her figure it out?
Also Do Greys always waste so much food? :D My Ozzy holds his "people" food and eats every last bit!!! Gracie picks it up in her mouth chews till she gets a piece and lets the rest drop!! Is this typical of Greys?
Thank you all in advance for your responces- I look forward to sharing all Gracie's milstones with you as she grow!!

hey welcome to the forum!  i'm thinking hard back to when i brought blue home.  She's been home around 6 weeks, it may just be a reassurance thing, i would feed her until she stops.  Blue reverted back to hand feeding when i brought him home and wouldn't touch pellets.  He got bored with it in his own time and moved onto feeding himself.

The waste is normal just be glad he's not flinging the pot across the room.  YET  ;D ;D

Look forward to seeing you around the board

Welcome to the forum from Ali/Captain. Greys doesn't go to a mannerism school, well at least not to any dine-ettiquets classes, hence majority of them takes liberty in throwing their feed because they know that their slaves--us--will refurbish the bowl soon.

Welcome to you and Gracie.
Potter (not a baby) but incredibly wasteful. If he is given a treat he will hold it and eat every last bit but if it's something he gets regularly he will take a couple of bites then drop in or throw it depending on his mood!

My understanding is that Greys throw their food about because this is nature's way of feeding the wider animal community. I.e.the more food Gracie throws around (assuming she is in the tree-tops)  the more widespread the benefits both to the wildlife and the the plants eaten - via dispersal of the seeds.  :)

Cheers,
Julie
