CAN I HAVE ADVICE
« on: September 21, 2008, 08:13:23 PM »
How long does it take for flight feathers to grow back. I have an african grey and the previous owners have clipped her wings made a right mess but my african grey still tries to fly and is injuring himself. I find it cruel to keep him locked in the cage as he like being near the family. I don't want the bird to keep hurting itself but i dont know what to do.

I'm in a similar position Kate, can't let my bird out but for a different reason, he keeps panicking and breaking his feathers, long story but same effect!  Can take up to a year for full repair but if your bird is calm and settled might take about 3-4 months for the feathers to start growing back in if you're lucky.  Hope all goes well.  :)

I have Toto's wings clipped every 4/ 5 months, which is how long it takes for her to get a decent gliding distance.  She's never had full flight feathers, so she's quite happy as is.  She gets loads of daily exercise, and never injures herself.

But I think it does take up to about a year for fully developed feathers.

Kate, once your bird can fly independendtly 6 feet on her own, don't think of trimming them again. Probably, around every six months. Of course, try to encourage bath monthly!(good luck with that, for African Grey). Miracles, have been known to happen! LOL  Nancy
