New grey owner needs help!
« on: August 02, 2007, 04:43:04 AM »
I'm adopting a 5 year old grey tomorrow that has a lame leg and has plucked most of her feathers out. This will be my first large bird and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks MDPCrosser16@msn.com

ok this is like the guidelines to owning a grey. Based on my research, some ppl do some things differently so dnt go on wat i say alone. U just keep researchn till u find what suits u ;)

if you care or the grey rite, then he should stop pucking. But it wont be easy, its a bit like biting our nails, onli worse for the birds and it wont be nice watching the poor thing do that to himself.

Diet
Good quality pellets should make up the bulk of the food. Pellets r an easy way into getting the bird most of its needed minerals an all.
A little seed in it will help, you could feed seperate at different times so when the bird has stopped eating seeds and is hungary again, he will onli have pellets and fruit and veg. The birds usually would try 2 finish off the seeds `1st so dnt have seperate bowls to keep refilling as this will result in the bird eating the seeds just. Of course every bird is different an might not like seeds lolz
Then fit in as much fruit and veg as you can, in lots of different ways. Some birds like diced, some warm, some cold, some big chunks, some on a kebab thingy.

Bathing
There are many ways to bathe your bird. Showering, misting and bathing. When showering, make sure the water does not change temp much.
Mist/shower/bathe your bird everyday or every other day or 4 times a week.
Doing this is important as it hydrates the skin and moisturises, helps cure dry/itchy skin. It also helps prevent/stop plucking. It also helps keep the feather dust under control.
Never spray, shower or splash water near the birds nares (nostrils)
If you leave a little bowl of water in the cage and turn on a hoover or hairdryer, sometimes this makes the bird want to bathe. (strange  ???)
NEVER blowdry, it beats the purpous of washing in the 1st place. It totally drys the skin again.
Misting is in my opinion, the easiest way of bathng a bird.

Other
Greys are in my opinion the most intelligent of birds. They have the intelligence of a 5 year old and the emotional range of a 2 year old. So very demanding birds.
The cage should be big enuff 2 stretch the wings and move about with ease.
Not all greys talk, dnt ever buy a grey just for a talking bird.
Greys can sometimes become 1 person birds, meaning they will love 1 person and probably become jealous alot lolz
They can also become single sex birds. They onli like 1 sex
Need alot of attention and reasurance as they r very shy birds believe it or not.
They need time out of thur cage everyday.
Toys wil be needed to keep them amused wen alone.
They can be so sensitive to change that even if you start wearing a different type of clothes theyl b annoyed.
Use caviet or a diffrent calcium supplement to help prevent/stop plucking
They also need this vitamin or something that you get from sunlight. I forget wat it is sorry, but if the bird doesnt get it then it will be harder 2 absorb the calcium which is much needed. If there isnt much sun were u r or the bird isnt out much then you can buy these specail lamps. Light from a window doesnt count.

hmm.. cant think of anything else, iv probably missed something obvious lolz

Hi - welcome to the forum.  I have actually found some amazing information within this group.  Very knowledgeable grey and bird owners are so willing to share information, experiences, etc...  reading past posts have been very helpful and never hesitate to post a question or concern.  I also have invested in several parrot and African books to learn as much as I can.  I have a reputable vet and bird store that we frequent and they are always willing to help out.

Linzy's information was very throrough - I just wanted to add from my experience that patience, love, ongoing attention and committment are important when owning a grey ( or for that matter any bird - but I own 2 greys).  The bird will need time to adjust and so will you.  Congrats on the new addition and can't wait to see pics.
